BAMBOO WORKSHOP | THE WAVE AND THE SEA FOREST

Material workshop | Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María | 2012
Jorge Godoy and first year teachers team

ENG Chilean Bamboo or Colihue grows and generously proliferates like weed in South Andean forests of the country, being a cheap and powerful material but not massively explored yet.A great quality of bamboo is that when it is used in its green state, vegetal fibbers offers great flexibility and plasticity allowing a wide formal exploration. However, as bamboo gets dryer, it becomes gradually a solid and rigid material with a unique capacity to keep the formal organization given while it was fresh.
The project takes this natural condition testing a series of shaping and assembling steps, achieving an initial formal exercise – The wave - where bamboo bars where curved and hold in order to freeze the shape.

Material workshop | first stage | May 2012

Material workshop | second stage | September 2012

90 days later tensors were removed to evaluate the effects, leaving a free and clean surface.
Singular pieces were release from the surface, classified and reorganized in a new field of vertical characteristics in radically new landscape, creating a seaside bamboo forest.
